Veria
Pieria Rent A Car also takes us to Veria.
Veroia belongs to Macedonia, is the seat of the Municipality of Veroia and is the capital of the prefecture of Imathia in Central Macedonia. It is built at the foothills of Mount Vermio. Veroia is famous for its traditional and classical architecture in its old neighborhoods and its numerous Byzantine and post-Byzantine churches.
Veroia – Archaeological Sites and Museums
Veroia is surrounded by archaeological sites and museums. It is almost impossible to be in this place and not happen to see, even by accident, one of the ancient treasures of the city.
The Apostle Paul’s Step is a historical monument of world renown and interest and a source of religious tourism for Veria. Every season of the year, hot or cold, people from every corner of the world visit Veria to see the footsteps of the Apostle Paul’s tour. He shared and taught his knowledge in Veroia in the 1st century AD and, delighted by the warm welcome of its inhabitants and the commitment of its citizens to his word, he continued his journey. So, at his memorial, in his honour, every year in June, a festive event takes place, entitled ”Pavleia”.
Veroia also hosts many Byzantine Churches . It is known to all that Veroia has numerous Byzantine and post-Byzantine churches (about 48 churches survive to this day out of 72, resulting in it being described as a small Jerusalem), and the collections of Byzantine icons that reside in them are numerous and admirable. The most widespread church is that of the Resurrection of the Saviour, or the”Church of Christ”. But other equally important churches are the church of Saints Peter and Paul in the 11th century, Saints Kirykos and Juliette in the 16th century and Saint John the Theologian in the 13th century.
In Veroia there are also Ottoman monuments. The old Metropolis, the Hunkiar Tzasimi, the Kazaktsi and Orta mosque are some of the old churches that the Turks converted into mosques when they settled in Veroia (15th century). A newer Muslim mosque, dating from the mid-19th century, is the Medresse mosque, named after the adjacent medresse, the Muslim seminary.
When you visit Veroia, together with Pieria Rent A Car, don’t miss to take a look at the Jewish Synagogue . In the heart of the Jewish Quarter, in Veroia, in Barbuta, lives the stone building of the Jewish Synagogue, with an elaborate and envious interior decoration. Behind it, the mikveh is still preserved today. A religious bathhouse, which, unlike the Christian quarters, which had the church in the middle, stood in line with their houses. Now they only maintain it as it is closed and only opens when Jews travel and come to pray. The Apostle Paul taught and preached in the same building when he visited Veroia in 51 and 57 AD.
Veria – Museums
The Byzantine Museum of Veroia is also housed in Veroia. The museum is housed in a strict and imposing listed industrial building of 1911, known as the “Mill of Markos”, which is located at the boundaries of the traditional district of Kyriotissa, right next to the ancient city wall.
The exhibits are housed on three floors, with a total area of 720 square metres, with each floor constituting a separate thematic section of the museum’s permanent exhibition. Impressive portable pictures, frescoes from temples and buildings of the region, mosaic floors, architectural sculptures, marble inscriptions, pottery and small crafts, coins, manuscripts and funerary finds make up the rare collection of the permanent exhibition of the Byzantine Museum of Veroia. The permanent collection of the museum in Veroia represents in the best way the glorious history of the city and proves that Veroia was a regional metropolis of the Byzantine Empire in the heart of Macedonia.
The Byzantine Museum of Veroia presents the prosperity of Veroia during the Byzantine era in detail.
In Veroia you can turn one by one the golden pages of Greek history, just with a tour of the Archaeological Museum of Veroia.
Pieria Rent A Car also takes us to the Archaeological Museum in Veroia, which hosts findings from the archaeological sites of the prefecture of Imathia, dating back to the Hellenistic and Roman times. The museum’s storeroom, of course, hides within it a priceless and rare treasure, a number of great finds and discoveries from prehistoric times (Nea Nikomideia) and the Iron Age ( Vergina Mounds Cemetery).
With a leisurely stroll through the garden of the Museum, one can admire the huge number of funerary and honorary altars, as well as various types of inscriptions. The most important exhibit of the Museum is an inscription with the ” GymnasiumLaw” of Veroia, the normative text of the operation of the Gymnasium of the ancient city.
The building of the Museum in Veroia is ground floor and consists of three rooms with exhibits and monuments. The first area of the Museum includes finds from burial sets of the Hellenistic period, such as vases, jewellery, weapons, but also a plaque depicting the burial tomb in Veroia. In the second room of the Museum, sculptures such as vases, figurines and inscriptions of the Hellenistic period are exhibited. In the third and last room you will be enchanted by the sculptures, portraits, figurines and jewellery of the Roman period.
Pieria Rent A Car takes us on a journey through history, giving us the opportunity to feel the awe and emotion of the greatness of the past.
Then visit the Museum of Education in Veria, which has a permanent exhibition that presents the evolution of education and its means of teaching in Greece, from the times of wax tablets, parchments, ancient ink and pencils to the era of notebooks, desks and computers.
Also the Museum of Modern History and Art, also known as ”Vlachogiannio” exhibits in a unique way the flourishing of art and the progress of modern history in this place.
Vergina
The famous Vergina is a small town in Macedonia. It is located in the prefecture of Imathia, so it is part of the region of Central Macedonia. It is very close to Veroia, just 13 kilometers away. It is located at the foot of the Pieria Mountains, at an altitude of 120 meters from the sea.
Vergina is aUNESCO World Heritage Site. It became known in 1977, after a University Excavation of the Aristotle University, under the archaeology professor Manolis Andronikos and his colleagues. The burial sites of the Macedonian kings were discovered and among the other tombs and a funerary monument, which according to Andronikos’ argumentation, was that of King Philip II, father of Alexander the Great. The discovery of these finds is considered by many to have confirmed the location of the ancient city of Aigai, the first capital of the Macedonian kingdom.

One of the greatest finds and world famous discovery is the Sun of Vergina or Star of Vergina . As we mentioned in our previous article, Pieria Rent A Car takes us on a trip to one of the most famous finds in Greek history.
If we look closely at this symbol, we can clearly see sixteen rays and the rosette. It was carved on a golden Larnaca, which they found in the royal tomb of Philip II. In Larnaca of Olympiades there is a variant of the sun of Vergina with 12 rays.

Archaeologists have not fully understood the meaning of the symbol even today. Some versions are that it was a solar symbol, a symbol of Macedonia, an emblem of the Argeadian dynasty of Philip, a religious symbol representing the 12 Gods of Olympus ( Greek National Religion ), or a decorative design.
Hexagonal, dodecagonal and octagonal Suns are often presented in Macedonian and Hellenistic coins and shields of the period, but also in finds from the wider Greek world (Greater Greece and Asia Minor), as early as the 6th century BC, as well as in depictions of Athenian soldiers and in coins, from island to mainland Greece, as a simple decorative element. After the discovery of Andronicus, the symbol began to be associated with the Ancient Macedonians, despite its first decorative use in Greek art.
Ancient Edessa
The fortified city of Hellenistic, Roman and early Christian times included part of the acropolis, where part of the later Byzantine quarter of Varosio is located, and the area of the lower city, which is known as Logos.
The excavations have brought to light a part of the lower city, as well as a large part of the wall with its various gates, of which the northern, southern and eastern gates are fairly well preserved. Within the city, a main street is preserved that started from the southern gate and was surrounded by galleries with columns that were placed there at a later stage, as they belonged to older buildings. One of them bears liberating slave inscriptions to the Edessa goddess Ma.
On both sides of the main road in Edessa, there are remains of buildings that belong mainly to the late phase of the city’s life, the early Christian phase, and were used as shops of various kinds, storage areas, military installations and residences. To the east and west of the main street there are passages leading to other parts of the town. Outside the city walls are the cemeteries with finds from the Archaic to the early Christian period, while just outside the northern part of the walls are the remains of an early Christian basilica.
Καταρράκτες
One of the beautiful natural phenomena in Edessa are the waterfalls. This phenomenon was created after a strong earthquake that hit the surrounding area in the 14th century, which created over the years many significant changes in the morphology of Edessa, due to smaller scale earthquakes.
In Edessa, the waterfalls are the main attraction for visitors and are one of the most important attractions in the whole of Greece. There are 12 waterfalls. Unfortunately, only four of them are visible, as the others are hidden behind the lush vegetation and cannot be easily seen.
The waterfalls of Edessa were formed in the 14th century after a geological or weather phenomenon. Initially the main volume of water was held in a basin west of the city, after which it began to flow through the city and fall spectacularly from the rock, creating many small rivers and eliminating the lake from which they originated.
At the end of the 19th century, in Edessa, several factories were built on the rock of the city as the waterfalls could be exploited to produce electricity at no cost, which was important for their viability. In total 5 large textile factories were erected and several workshops and tanneries. Each factory used a waterfall to achieve production and create an autonomous electricity system.
After the war and the re-establishment of the Municipality of Edessa, the area passes into the hands of the state. The Municipality of Edessa is recruiting gardeners and gardeners for the regeneration and promotion of the area where large gardens and paths are being constructed. A milestone in the process was in 1953 when the municipal restaurant called “PISINES” was completed and started operating on the island between the two big waterfalls. By the early 1960s, access roads and “belvedere” type points were constructed so that visitors could approach the site safely.
